Profile picture of Tareeq Jalloh

I’m a Junior Research Fellow at University College Oxford (University of Oxford), working on the Philosophy of Contemporary Rap Music. I work at the intersection of Social/Political Philosophy, Ethics, and Aesthetics.

I am the recipient of the 2025 Journal of Applied Philosophy’s “Best Paper Prize” for my paper Speech Acts and Unspeakable Raps. My paper “Does Drill Constitute an Epistemic Injustice (2022) has also been cited in a criminal trial case report to contest the use of rap music as evidence. I have also served as a rap expert in a criminal trial where the prosecution claimed that a rap written by the defendant was relevant evidence.

I completed my PhD in philosophy from the University of Sheffield (2025). Before joining University College Oxford, I held a postdoctoral position at the University of Manchester (2024-2025), working on the ethics of archiving Black-British music.

When I’m not doing philosophy, you might find me at the front row of a live-grime set or at the gym. I also enjoy playing video games and listening to music on long walks/long drives.
